SUNDSTROM, John Vernon (Jack)

John Vernon (Jack) Sunstrom was born 24th February 1892 in Oxolund Sweden. He came out to Western Australia to stay with his uncle who operated a South Perth Ferry Service; eventually becoming a naturalised British Subject in 1914.

He was married with two children at the commencement World War 2 and owned a well-established newsagency in Claremont, a dominant suburb of Perth. In 1940/41 for undisclosed reasons, he sold up and took work in Darwin where he worked on the wharf.

He was fifty-one years of age when killed during the bombing of Darwin. His name is mentioned in a list of civilian casualties produced on 11 June 1942. He was listed in the death notices of The West Australian on 4 April 1942 with the following passage:

'Sundstrom—On February 19, at Darwin, as result of air raid. John. Loving husband of Dorothy and fond father of John and Beverley.'
