TYRELL, Tom

Portmar

The Portmar, beached after being damaged in the first Japanese raid.

Tom Tyrell was possibly a crew member on the Portmar.

The United States freighter Portmar had just returned to Darwin as part of a convoy that had been turned back from Portuguese Timor. The convoy had departed on the 15 February 1942 and was made up of the Houston, Mauna Loa, Meigs, Tulagi, HMAS Swan and HMAS Warrego.

On the 19 February 1942, the Portmar sustained damage from a bomb and was forced to beach. It was reported that one of the crew perished; whether this was Tyrell has not been confirmed.

The Portmar was later sunk by a Japanese submarine when she was travelling in a convoy from Sydney to Brisbane in June 1943.
