Unit History

Requisitioned on 12 December 1942, Merkur was the sister ship to Neptuna. Post hostilities she was despatched to Borneo as a 'Mercy' ship with supplies for liberated former Prisoners of War. Merkur was operating as a commercial cargo vessel prior to the bombing of Darwin and in November 1941 she carried a cargo of Mother of Pearl shell to New York via Singapore for the Edwards family of Darwin. Merkur made 18 trips to Darwin.
